FAQs

1. What is CARB PHASE TWO (P2) Board?

CARB stands for the California Air Resources Board. Known as the “clean air agency”, CARB is a department of the California Environmental Protection Agency. It was established in 1967 with the purpose of maintaining and improving air quality, and researching causes and solutions of air pollution. CARB2 is part of a two-phase implementation of California’s Composite Wood Products Regulation. In 2009, Phase 1 took effect.
Phase 2 started in 2010. In the same year, CARB2 became the national standard for reducing formaldehyde emissions. The goal of Phase 2 was reducing formaldehyde emissions further. For hardwood plywood, the emission level reduced to .05 parts per million.

2. Why we use P2 board but not E1?

To be compliant, a product has to pass a quality control test. CARB Phase Two (P2) Board has been the national standard especially in California in the United States since it was established. E1 is the formaldehyde safety standard in Europe, which permits formaldehyde emissions from MDF up to 10ppm. E1 cannot reach the formaldehyde emission standard in California.

3. What is California’s Proposition 65?

California’s Proposition 65 is also called the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, which became law in 1986. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) says Prop 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
In August 2018, new OEHHA regulations took effect, requiring websites that sell products that qualify for the warning to include these labels. This is why you may see our products affixed with a sticker warning label about this. We make this label because of law restrictions not on purpose. It is common for all kind of product in our daily life, so you do not need to be too anxious about it.
